The Competence and Learning Centre of the Freiburg University Library provides a rich offer of training and courses, which contribute to develop and enhance essential competencies (key qualifications) of the students, especially undergraduate. In particular:
·  Competence of targeted media and information searching
·  Competence of ready media and information provision
·  Competence of media and information handling.

They are all included in the Anglo-American concept of “information literacy”.
These key qualifications should be taught at different levels
according to the different study degrees.

Information and media literacy (basic competencies)
·  Know how to autonomously perform literature searching in the online catalogue of the University Library and on the Internet
·  Know how to autonomously reserve available literature through the OLAF loan system of the University Library and the Internet
·  Know how to autonomously use the different media- reading- and work areas of the University Library
·  Know how to autonomously use when needed the literature external supply (including the electronic document delivery on the Internet)
·  Know how to autonomously perform simple literature searches using bibliographic databases
·  Know how to orient oneself in the great quantity of information and media

Information and media literacy (specialised competencies)
·  Know how to autonomously perform complex literature searches using bibliographic databases
· Know how to select relevant bibliographic databases for a topic search and a suitable conventional information medium
·  Know how to autonomously perform topic-oriented searches using specialised bibliographic databases
·  Know how to use the available electronic full texts (for ex. electronic journals) in a subject field
·  Know how to introduce the audiovisual media in topic-oriented multimedia arrangements (designs)
·  Know how to use further specialised information available in the Internet on a subject

These basic and specialised competencies are taught and practiced in different learning forms:
·  Library introduction
·  Library presentation to small groups (2-5 people)
·  Library presentation to large groups (from 6 people)
·  Exercises for groups up to 10 people
·  Free exercises under guidance
·  Distance learning through the www (for ex. the tutorials of the University Library)
·  Roadshows of the University Library
·  Discussion and debate about specific study and research projects (including multimedia offers)

Profession-oriented competences (BOK) – Information/Media literacy

Roadshow
The Roadshow is aimed at informing students about the electronic offers and services of the University Library. The disciplinary referees present them on a fixed day.
Its main objectives are:

  To increase the use of electronic resources
-
 
To provide media and information literacy
-  To make students and teachers sensitive to the concrete benefits and advantages of these products and services
-
  To strengthen the relations between the University Library and the disciplinary Departments, to present innovations related to the scientific and technical information.
