Biology
· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Biology (1 hour)
The training provides an overview about the disciplinary bibliographic databases in Biology; search strategies, structure and possibilities in single databases (such as BIOSIS Previews or Web of Science) are explained and taught on the basis of search samples.

· Course: literature searching through biological databases (2 sessions: 2 hours each)

The course provides the students the possibility to practise under guidance literature searching in disciplinary databases in Sciences of Life and Forestry. At the beginning the structure and the surface of the databases (GEOBASE, TREECD, BIOSIS Previews, SCI Expanded / Web of Science) are presented, at the end practical search exercises are performed.

 

 

Science of Forestry
Introduction
: bibliographic databases in Science of Forestry

The training provides an overview about the disciplinary bibliographic databases in Science of Forestry; search strategies, structure and possibilities in single databases (such as TREECD or Web of Science) are explained and taught on the basis of search samples.

 

 

Germanistics
· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Germanistics (1 hour)
The training provides an overview about the disciplinary bibliographic databases in Germanistics “Bibliographie der deutschen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft” (Bibliography of the German language and literature) (Eppelsheimer-Köttelwesch) and “Annual bibliography of the Modern Language Association of America” (MLA bibliography).

 

· Course: literature searching in Germanistics

Art history

· Introduction: Image search for art historians

The introduction provides an overview about offers and possibilities of the image search, in Architecture and Art History. A selection of wide catalogues and collections with images of artistic memorials and art in electronic form, on microfiches and on print. On the basis of sample searches search possibilities and topic issues of single image collections and picture databases are especially explained.

 

· Course: The introduction to the Internet-based literature search

The introduction to the Internet-based literature search provides the basics of literature searching for homework. At the beginning the online catalogue of the University Library and other library and union catalogues are presented and the bibliographic databases available via ReDI (including RILA and FRANCIS) are explained on the basis of practical exercises.
This is an additional, mandatory session for the first semester, arose from the collaboration between the Institute for Art History and the Freiburg University Library.

 

An useful Introduction to bibliographic searching for Architecture and Art History (prepared by Angela Karasch) is freely available (in German only).

 

 

Orientalistics

· Introduction: Bibliographic databases in Orientalistics

A selection of bibliographic databases in Orientalistics is presented; the focus is on the different topics and areas of interest of the course participants and their individual demands (Islamistics, Sinology, Indology, Ancient East, Judaistics)

Researches on various topics (Religion, History, Politics, Literature) are carried out.

In the centre of the training there is one of the following databases: MLA, ATLA Religion Database or Index Islamicus. Other electronic offers in the field of Orientalistics of the University Library (reference works, e-journals) are presented on demand.

 

· Course: literature searching in Orientalistics

Politics
· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Politics  (2 hours)

The main databases in Politics are presented: WAO / WISO 3 / IBSS; in particular, the contents of these databases, their search surfaces and possibilities are examined. The search samples are based on demands of participants.

 

· Course: literature searching through political databases

The course provides the students the possibility to practise under guidance literature searching in disciplinary databases in Politics. The sample searches are carried out in the areas of interest of participants. Not only searching, but also sorting and clustering of search results are practised.

 

 

Law

· Introduction: how to search and find literature and jurisprudence (basics -1 hour)

This introduction provides an overview about the bibliographic law databases and jurisprudence databases (juris, Kuselit, beck-online, LEGIOS, etc.).

 

· Course: how to search and find literature and jurisprudence (deepening - 2 sessions: 2 hours each)

Target groups: students in intermediate and higher semesters; postgraduates

The course provides the students the possibility to practise under guidance searching for laws, jurisprudence and literature in disciplinary databases in Law and Jurisprudence. Access, structure and search surfaces of the databases (juris, Kuselit, beck-online, LEGIOS, etc.) are presented and explained.

 

· Introductory lesson for the first semester (basics - 2 sessions: 1 hour each)

Romanistics

Introduction to electronic media for Romanists

The training program recruits students who attend in the academic year a linguistic proseminar. A successful participation in the training program is mandatory: it is an integrative part of the proseminar.

 

Useful Materials for the training program “Introduction to electronic media for Romanists” (prepared by Gabriele Sobottka) is freely available (in German only).

 

 

Sociology

· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Sociology (2 hours)

The main disciplinary databases for literature searching in Sociology (WISO 3, Sociological Abstracts and IBSS) are presented. The introduction provides the participants with an overview about the content issues of the databases, the search and processing possibilities. Then the construction of a competent search strategy with the aid of keywords/descriptors is demonstrated.

 

· Course: literature searching through sociological databases

On the basis of the introduction, the course provides the students the possibility to practise under guidance literature searching in disciplinary databases in Sociology (WISO 3, Sociological Abstracts, IBSS etc.). The single steps in the construction of a search strategy are repeated and thoroughly re-explained.

 

 

Theology
· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Theology (2 hours)

The bibliographic databases in Theology are presented: the main one, Index Theologicus (journal content service – Theology) and some others (the ATLA Religion Database, the Periodicals Contents Index, the Philosopher's Index).

 

· Course: introduction to the scientific works and theological literature knowledge (2 hours)

Key issues of the proseminar

How to search for and find relevant literature for reports, presentations and homeworks.

How to use a scientific library

How to search for scientific literature on the Internet.

How to analyse and evaluate the found literature.

How to cite literature.

How to prepare reports, presentations etc.

How to write homeworks and what watch out for.


The course provides the students – study beginners above all – the essential skills and techniques necessary for their scientific works in Theology and an overview about the disciplinary literature search and its possibilities.

The development and acquisition of these technical skills should not only be abstract, but must face selected extracts from the second Vatican Council.

Through the proseminar thanks to active collaboration the ability to write papers, reports and homeworks is learned, developed and practised.

 

 

Anglistics

· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Anglistics (1 hour)

The training provides an introduction to bibliographic databases in Anglistics: “Annual bibliography of the Modern Language Association of America" (MLA bibliography) and "Annual bibliography of English language and literature" (ABELL).

Introduction: bibliographic databases in Educational science and pedagogy
The bibliographic databases in Educational science and pedagogy are presented: FIS Bildung Literaturdatenbank (predominantly German-language literature) and ERIC (predominantly English-language/American literature). The Bibliography in History of Education is presented on demand.

 

 

Earth sciences

Introduction: bibliographic databases in Earth sciences (1 hour)

The training provides an overview about the disciplinary bibliographic databases in Earth sciences: search strategies, structure and possibilities in single databases (such as GEOBASE and GeoRef) are explained and taught on the basis of search samples.

 

 

History
· Introduction: bibliographic databases in History (2 hours)

The bibliographic databases in History are presented: in the centre of this introduction there is the database Historical Abstracts. Other important databases in the field – Historische Bibliographie (Historical Bibliography), Jahresberichte für die deutsche Geschichte (Annual reports for the German History), Periodicals Contents Index; International Medieval Bibliography – can be presented.

Introduction
: bibliographic databases in Philosophy (2 hours)

The bibliographic databases in Philosophy are presented: in the centre of this introduction there is the database Philosopher's Index. Other important databases in the field – International Philosophical Bibliography, Periodicals Contents Index – can be presented.

 

 

Psychology

· Introduction: bibliographic databases in Psychology (2 hours)

The main disciplinary databases for literature searching in Psychology (PSYNDEX, PsycINFO etc.) are presented. The introduction provides the participants with an overview about the content issues of the databases, and the construction and implementation of a search strategy.

For both these databases an online learning unit  is now available.

 

· Course: literature searching through psychological databases

On the basis of the introduction, the course provides the students the possibility to practise  literature searching in disciplinary databases in Psychology. The sample searches are selected on the basis of the areas of interest of participants.

Each course is limited to 9 participants.

 

 

Religious studies

Introduction: bibliographic databases in Religious studies

The bibliographic databases in general and comparative Religious studies are presented: in the centre there is the database ATLA Religion Database. Sample searches on other databases can be carried out on demand.
