Winter semester 2005/2006

Course

Topic
The needle in the haystack”: How to find, select and present the right information – Information literacy project work

Aim
To build confidence in students in handling and managing scientific information and literature within a concrete work project.

Performing and managing quick and effective searches, the pondered selection and a pleasant presentation of information – in order to satisfy political, social and scientific demands – belong to the core contents of a scientific education.
Today, in front of the information and publishing overflow of the Internet age, information literacy is an inalienable requirement and a key qualification for a successful work in politics, economy and journalism.
The training presents and teaches through practice work techniques in finding and handling information. Within a project work, on the basis of a current and socially relevant subject, pertinent information are gathered, screened and arranged with the view of an electronic publishing.
After a concise, basic introduction to the possibilities of scientific information searching and literature provision, the participants in groups should develop some specific features of the project topic. In the end the information gathered and prepared by the groups is included in an information folder and electronically published.
