General introductions

Offers for study beginners  (Winter semester 2005-2006)
The University Library provides students just enrolled in the University of Freiburg (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg) with special introductions to the use of the library.
During the tour of the Library (about 1 and half hours) all the main services and users’ resources, tools and opportunities are showed and explained in detail.

Library guided tours
The library tour (about 1 and half hours) begins with the catalogues and the loan system, takes into the text book collection and the exchange store, reviews further services and ends into the bibliographic centre and in the reading rooms.

Special library introductions for tutors
Library introduction
(about 1 and half hours): deepening of its services, resources and tools for tutors, who at the beginning of semester take upon themselves the guidance of the study beginners.

Field oriented introductions to the Library’s heritage and information sources
During the library tour an aimed orientation about the services, media collections and information sources relevant for the different study fields

Bibliographic searching on the online catalogue
The online catalogue and its use
: basic and advanced means and opportunities (about 1 hour)

The document delivery services through the Internet  (about 1 hour) 

Internet offers of the University Library
A general introduction (about 1 hour) to its www services: catalogue, loan system, bibliographic databases, electronic full texts, subject sites etc.

General introduction to searching bibliographic databases (about 1 hour)
The whole spectrum of the offers relating to bibliographic databases is presented on the basis of representative samples. A basic knowledge about search strategies, their structure and evaluation of search results is taught.

Introduction to searching multidisciplinary databases (about 1 hour)
The spectrum of the offers relating to national bibliographies,
booktrade catalogues (DNB, VLB, BIP, BNF), journals lists (PCI, Francis, SwetScan) is presented on the basis of representative samples. A basic knowledge about search strategies, their structure and evaluation of search results is taught.

Introduction for seminar courses for secondary schools (Gymnasien)
The University Library provides special introductions to the library use for seminar courses for secondary schools (Gymnasien).
This offer is aimed at the topic of the seminar courses and should take the students to the rich stocks and the main services of the University Library. The introduction focuses on the main following questions:
· 
How do I search for literature for my topic?
·  How do I find the necessary books and information for my topic?
·  How can I effectively use the resources of the University Library?
During the library tour the catalogue, the loan system, the reading rooms and the bibliographic centre are shown. The students practise literature searches on the catalogue. They should be able to autonomously locate, find and borrow the necessary literature.
