The University
Library of Heidelberg - a public academic university library - is the main
library of the University of Heidelberg (Ruprecht-Karls-Universität) library
system, serving some 24,000 students. The library also provides literature and
information for other institutions of higher learning in Heidelberg (Teacher
training academy, University for Jewish Studies) as well as for users in both
the city of Heidelberg and the surrounding region (Baden-Württemberg).
At the University Library of Heidelberg the modular teaching approach was
first developed in 1996-97 as the result of a lot of experience and learning
in the nineties. The main characteristics of the present teaching activities
are:
·
Small teaching units (1-2 hours)
·
Teaching modules integrated by a small curriculum
·
Complementary online tutorials
·
DYMIK
as a model of information literacy providing a basis for developing and
reflecting the witnessed teaching activities.
Small teaching units
are necessary because of staff-related and organisational conditions at the
University of Heidelberg. Only two persons belong to the Department of User
Education and Adult Education for Librarians. As the courses of the library are
not integrated into the curriculum of the faculties, participation is optional.
As students thus only spend a limited amount of time on learning opportunities,
courses are offered in small packages.
The courses can be regarded as teaching modules connected to one another by a
small curriculum. The competencies and learning targets of information
literacy are distributed between the courses, which differ in their focal points
such as “introduction to library building and services” or “finding information
by using catalogues”. The different taxonomies with their possibilities of
differentiation of learning targets according to abstraction (e.g. broad and
precise targets) or levels (e.g. knowing or understanding) are of fundamental
importance. They are the facilitating basis for the didactic reduction of
content and hierarchical sequencing of novice and expert courses. Basic courses
with complementary contents in the library, catalogues, internet and databases
are now offered: 6 hours are required in total. In the expert courses concerned
with using specialised information efficiently, participants are expected to
have acquired fundamental competencies already.
The courses at the University Library of Heidelberg are complemented by
online tutorials concerning the building with its conventional services
and catalogues. The important benefit of these tutorials is their
flexibility in time and location. They can be used from every workplace with an
internet connection. One recent activity is the development of an
e-learning-course called “Introduction to
information literacy
for students of Psychology”.
Experience made with WebCT are published in Homann, Benno, WebCT als
E-Learning-Plattform bei der Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz für
Psychologen.
“Bibliotheksdienst” 37 (2002), No. 11.
An additional element of the approach was the development of the “Dynamic
Model of Information Literacy”
(DYMIK). It
is based on the Anglo-American models of information literacy and was adapted to
the special requirements of this context.
Further information on the structure and details of this teaching approach can
be found in the following publications: Homann, Benno, Schulungen als Aufgabe
einer benutzerorientierten Bibliothek.

A proposal for a systematic integration of teaching information literacy into
courses of the University of Heidelberg was published in Homann, Benno,

Lernen. “BuB – Forum für Bibliothek und Information”, 36 (2001), No. 9, p.
