Research programme: Studies of interactive information retrieval and seeking
Within the research agenda of the Department of Information Studies  - Royal School of Library and Information Science  this programme aims at studying the processes and phenomena that occur in connection with human beings’ information seeking behaviour, searching and locating information, relevance assessment and use of information as well as the presentation, mediation and communication, design and evaluation of, primarily interactive, information retrieval systems, irrespective of information media and the type of information including the development of theoretical, conceptual and methodological frameworks for the understanding of such processes and phenomena.

Within this programme, research activities are concentrated on the following priority areas:

·       Studies of hypertext functionality in information systems comprising empirically conducted user studies of metadata including the functionality of subject-related data as a link-creating medium in selected types of online information systems, like for instance traditional bibliographic systems, as well as network-based dynamic multi-media systems, e.g. the Internet, World Wide Web, and digital libraries and archives.

·      Evaluation of interactive scientific information retrieval systems which study, develop further and evaluate the application of non-boolean search facilities to scientific information, among other things by the inclusion of citation networks and other typical forms of representation as well as the function of the user interface in the context of query modification and relevance-feedback. The studies are founded on a broadly based theory on relevance and relevance measurements and draw upon the international knowledge generated by the current TREC investigations.
