The
DOTEINE research group
Mission
The DOTEINE research group is dedicated to advancing
in the development of Library & Information Science principles, instruments
and techniques applied to the educational domain as one of the contributing
means to transform Information Society into the Knowledge Society.
It is directed by Prof Miguel Ángel Marzal.
Most of its members work at the Library &
Information Science Department of the Carlos III University of Madrid.
Main research areas
·
Information literacy.
·
Learning objects and educational documents in e-learning
environments.
·
Representation of educational content (educational metadata
and controlled vocabularies).
·
Semantic organization and visualization of educational content
for improved retrieval (ontologies, concept maps and topic maps).
·
Educational digital libraries.
The DOTEINE group has recently joined the Information Policy SOCTEP
research group to constitute the ACROPOLIS
group, coordinated by Prof.
Mercedes Caridad Sebastián.
Principles and values
The principles and values that support the formulated mission are:
- The commitment with the strategic research policy of Carlos
III University, its Library &
Information Science Department and the "Agustín
Millares" University Institute of Information Science and Management,
in their pursue of continuous improvement and innovation in research.
- The excellence in educating doctoral students in the group's
research areas.
- The cooperative, interdisciplinary and international
vocation of its research action.
- The commitment with the social projection of research
results.
Objectives
1. To develop conceptual models, from the paradigms of Content
Analysis, capable of conceiving new ways of improving the present means
available for representing, organizing and retrieving educational digital
contents, that could lead to a meaningful educational use of the Web and advance
towards the Semantic Web.
2. To
develop and design models, applications and instruments to support Information
Literacy, in its dimension of "co-operative or constellation" of
competencies, to guarantee meaningful and lifelong learning.
3. To develop ICT instruments for the visualization and
treatment of digital contents, capable of articulating an effective information
system for knowledge construction in virtual interactive environments and
virtual educational communities.
4. To develop and implement descriptive models and vocabularies, for a semantic
labelling of educational contents in digital repositories.
5. To design and implement models and
instruments for the organization of virtual and interactive digital information
resources, to support the transformation of school and academic libraries into
Learning Resources Centers (LRC) and Learning & Research Resources Centers (LRRC)
respectively , as well as for the development of suitable platforms for
Information Literacy, as vehicles of transverse competencies in the new
educational model.
6. To design and to develop instruments for the edition
and application of learning objects, as main digital educational documents in
the digital collections of LRCs and LRRCs.
Research projects and activities
The DOTEINE group is developing, has developed or has been a partner in a
number of funded projects, including:
1. The DOTEINE
project. Documentation and Information
Technologies for Education: Instruments for Information Literacy and the
Organization of Educational Resources (2003-2006). Funded by the
Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology.
2. The ALIMADIES
project. Information Literacy: Digital educational
materials and indicators for its evaluation in Higher Education (2006).
Co-financed by the regional government of the Madrid Community (Comunidad de
Madrid) and the Carlos III University.
3. The
IACORIE
project. Content Analysis Instruments for organizing information resources in
Education: Learning Resources Centers for the Knowledge Society (2005).
Funded by the Autonomous Government of Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid).
4. The BUCRAI
project: From the University Library to the Resource Centre for
Learning and Research (2004). Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education
and Culture.
