Conference

Scientific libraries in culture and civilisation: activity and everyday life

Poznań, 15-17 June 2005

Main organiser: Main Library of Poznań University of Technology

Goal
The present conference aims at seeing a library as a cultural and civilization institution of the beginnings of the 21st century.
The goal of the conference is an attempt at analyzing and answering the following questions:

ˇ  how much Polish technical and universal libraries (state and private) include the "philosophy of action" among their tasks to better serve readers and users;
ˇ

to what extent do they use in their everyday life (according to "every day life philosophy") the library traditions of long standing, as well as specialist knowledge and professional experience;

ˇ

how well they are prepared to take part in the globalization process as well as cultural and civilization changes in communities surrounding the libraries.

Main topics

ˇ  discussion on the holistic nature of a scientific library (changes in structure, long-term activity versus trends in management concepts, the influence of tradition versus modern activity);
ˇ  globalization processes in a library (from the library in a national state to the library in a network state, from the library in a guardian state to the library in a neo-liberal state);
ˇ  the evolution of library catalogues (distributed catalogs and NUK at National Union catalog, model of structural catalog); also internet directories and guides in usage (branch directories, information search on the WEB, development possibilities;
ˇ  the presence of electronic civilization in a library (attempt at description of the civilization, at least 10 years of electronic resources' usage research, digital collections and services);
ˇ  usage of information and communication technologies (in academic education and scientific and technical research);
ˇ  views on the educational status of a librarian and scientific information specialist in a library (training forms available, levels of education - comparison and evaluation, abilities and knowledge in educational programs).

ABOUT NATURE OF A RESEARCH LIBRARY
ˇ Bożena Jaskowska, The library in the culture, the culture in the library: informational-library process in relation to the Polish national culture.
The paper describes the influence of Polish national culture on the informational processes, on the behaviour of the information users and their informational culture. The first part of the paper presents cultural differences and their comparative analysis in terms of the isolation of the authorities, the individualism-collectivism and the level of tolerance to uncertainty. The second part of the paper shows the impact of Polish culture on informational - library processes from two points of view: from the organizational culture in academic libraries and information centers, and that of the users, their behaviour and informational culture. The aim of this paper is to initiate a discussion about the organizational culture in the Polish academic libraries and information services.

Session three
LIBRARY - TRADITION AND THE PRESENT
ˇ Danuta Konieczna, Academic library as the institution promoting educational process.

Among others the Bologna Process, forms and methods of education in libraries, distance learning, organizational culture in libraries, organization of library space, promotion of library services, training of library staff are discussed. The librarianship course syllabi are explored from the point of view of the preparation of future librarians for educational tasks in libraries. The proposed didactic activities in the new library building of the Warmia and Mazury University in Olsztyn are presented.

ˇ Aldona Chachlikowska, Culture-making role of a research library with the case example of Poznan University Library.
A research academic library primarily provides services to staff and undergraduates fulfilling the function of assisting the didactic process and research work carried out in the fields represented at a given university or within the research community of the town. However, it is also a public institution that has an additional task of sharing its expertise, experience and its collections with the general public. Consequently, assuming the responsibility for disseminating culture and culture-making use of the nation's heritage, a research library, and an academic library in particular, should aim at being viewed as an open and friendly place. The paper presents proposals and actual activities of Poznań University Library in the field of broadly understood forms of disseminating culture. The activity of documenting the nation's cultural legacy is targeted at a broad spectrum of active and potential users of the Library: undergraduates, research workers and University staff, as well as general public from and outside the town.

ˇ Agnieszka Majewska - Mariola Szyda, Student expectations in the changing libraries based on the example of three faculty libraries of the Main Library of Czestochowa University of Technology.
The purpose of this paper is to present the position and the role of the three faculty libraries of the Main Library of Częstochowa University of Technology in the students education process and in meeting their expectations. The results of the survey allow assessing the activity of the faculty libraries, their resources and access to electronic sources. The recognition and understanding of user needs and the analysis of their satisfaction contribute to implementing changes.
