From reading development to information literacy – From children
to teens:
the activities of the Hamburg Public Libraries
The activities of the Hamburg Public Libraries address children as from 3rd
years old through various initiatives – games, programs, projects etc. – in
order to develop their reading literacy and to provide them tailored
library instruction.
Reading and information
literacy are the main
learning objectives. They aren’t pursued through traditional frontal
lessons, but through innovative didactic forms: students learn using
autonomously the library and its tools.
In Hamburg library use is integrated into the curricula. The new German
framework plans prescribe a library research
for classes from 1. to 8. at least once every two years.
It requires a close collaboration between teachers and library staff.
To that end, the School librarians’ Section of the Hamburg Public Libraries
and the Authority for Education and Sport developed together a
list of measures.
Large supporting material (rallies, library games, library introductions,
catalogue exercises, infopages for pupils, teachers and parents) has been
prepared by the librarians of the Hamburg Public Libraries and put into the
HÖB Intranet by the HÖB School librarians’ Section.
The School librarians’ Section in co-operation with the Authority for Education
and Sport put an online folder/dossier for Hamburg teachers on the Internet,
and in the
portal of the Hamburg Public Libraries:
http://www.buecherhallen.de.
“Information and work materials for teachers for the school’s use of the Hamburg
Public Libraries in the classes as from 5. to 8.” can be found under the icon
“Offers for schools”.
There are didactic information for using the library, HÖB information and
workpages to visit the library and to use the catalogues, and search training
offers.
As from the school year 2005-2006
for the first time in Summer 2005 the School librarians’ Section and the
Authority for Education and Sport regularly provide professional training for
teachers for teaching library use and information literacy in library and school.
The Hamburg Children’s Library – opened in March 2004 –
plays a key role in the development of reading and
information literacy.
The
HOEB4U site addresses young
people. A new junior library in Hamburg, attractive for young people,
is planned for 2005.
