The AG Informationskompetenz (Information Literacy) coordinates all activities concerning information literacy at academic libraries in Northrhine-Westphalia through a network of mediators in each institution and in cooperation with similar projects in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
It  was founded in 2002 by the Consortium of university libraries in vbnw - Association of the Libraries of Land Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V. together with the polytechnic libraries.

The main objectives of the initiative are the increase of effectiveness and quality

· Concerning human resources by sharing and exchanging information and experiences (i.e. the position of the library within the university, library policy, marketing etc.) and through continuing vocational training, professional development and quality management;

· Concerning general conditions by developing and supervising teaching methods and practices and by setting and improving standards for equipment and class rooms and general organisation (see: Standards for teaching  information literacy in higher education);

· By providing a communication and information platform as a forum for interested colleagues and the general public.

All activities aim at improving the information skills of library users in general, particularly of students and researchers.
Main target groups: library users (esp. university students and researchers); library staff.

Results of the common activities include the publication of library standards for the teaching of information literacy, recommendations for the integration of information literacy into academic teaching (curricula analysis), introduction of quality management and evaluation.

All publications and conference papers are listed at: http://www.informationskompetenz.de/aufsaetze-vortraege.htm

Current project Cooperate work on an Online Tutorial Information Literacy NRW is in progress and will be ready by the start of the AY 2006-2007.

Further information about the AG Information Literacy working group, its activities, problems, and plans at the start of the initiative can be found in German in the Progress Report (5 July 2002).
