The National Library functions as a service and development centre for Finnish libraries with a duty to promote both national and international co-operation. It is also responsible for acquiring and preserving the national heritage in form of publications as well as maintaining its collections of research material and for providing access to them.

During the terms the Library provides programmes of information to users. The programmes include instruction on using services and databases. They are open for all.

User education for groups
The Library arranges group programmes relating to some special field. The programmes are free for students enrolled in the University of Helsinki, other groups are charged.
