Elective courses – AEFIN

AEFIN = Advanced English for International Networking
is an academic English language and communication specialization programme for students who wish to develop their skills for international study or work contexts, such as participating in student exchange /traineeship abroad, working in multicultural teams and research networks, becoming more confident about intercultural encounters, etc. AEFIN was started in 1995 and runs annually.
The total extent of AEFIN is 10 Finnish credits (ov) / 20 ECTS points, but the student can also opt for just one or two courses.
AEFIN consists of a series of courses, which focus on specific academic communication skills in English needed for university study or research purposes or in international workplaces.
There are three main components to the programme - Workplace Communication, Language and Society and Research Communication - and a support section - Learning Support - to develop life-long learning skills and brush up existing skills. 
At least one course from each main section is compulsory if the student wish to complete the whole programme (i.e. 10 ov / 20 p), but the rest can be chosen according to individual needs, purposes, and interests.
The courses are independent from one another. Some courses have been integrated directly with subject department courses.

Language and Society
These courses focus on developing intercultural communication skills and cultural literacy needed in international contexts. Among them there is:

  • Intercultural communication, cultural literacy and media 
    XEN0061 News Reporting in English (1 ov / 2 op/ECTS credits)


Research communication
These
courses focus on developing oral and/or written skills for international research communication:

  • XEN0097 Basic Academic Writing Course (2 ov / 3 op/ECTS credits)

  • XENX009 Integrated Research Communication (4 ECTS credits) - International master's programmes

  • XEN_008 Integrated Research Communication (various faculties; Masters, postgraduates, research staff)
  • XEN0060/ XEN0034 Research Reporting in English (1 ov / 2 op/ECTS credits) or Seminar and Conference Skills (Interdisciplinary) (1 ov / 2 op/ECTS credits)


Learning skills
These courses focus on developing learning skills needed in academic study. Among them there are:

  • XENX012 Independent Language Learning (2 ov / 3 op/ECTS)

  • XEN054 Academic Study Skills (1 ov / 2 op/ECTS )

  • XEN022 English Academic Skills for Exchange Students (2 ov / 3 op/ECTS)
