The Royal Library is Denmark's largest library and contributes to the promotion and support of the spread of knowledge, education, research and cultural activities through the organisation and provision of access to materials of information and culture.

The Royal Library has four main purposes: It is Denmark's National library and the University library for the University of Copenhagen. In addition it is a research institution and has cultural and museum activities.

As a university library and a national subject library the Royal Library makes available the most relevant and comprehensive scholarly literature for research and higher education at the University of Copenhagen, and for the whole of Denmark within the disciplines of the humanities, theology, the social sciences and law.

The Royal Library is under the jurisdiction of the Danish Ministry of Culture.
