The
Institute of Public Health
was established on the first of January 1997 at the Faculty of Health
Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and is responsible for the major
part of the teaching in Copenhagen of the Master of Public Health programme.
The purpose of the institute is to perform research, teaching and consulting
within the area of public health. The Institute is member of the
Association of Schools of Public Health for the
European Region (ASPHER)
and the MPH programme was positively evaluated by ASPHER in 1998.
2-year
Master of Public Health
(90 ECTS)
The Danish Public Health
programme was initiated in 1996 at the University of Copenhagen.
The programme interacts with the health care and social system outside the
university in content, disciplines and teaching methods, as well in decision
making. The programme is considered an important resource in the public health
strategy of the Danish Government. The university in Copenhagen guarantees its
scientific independence, quality and relevance.
Target group
Professional working in Public Health:
trainees in public health medicine,
health promotion officers, managers in health services, epidemiologists, nurses,
environmental health officers and specialists in control of communicable
diseases.
The MPH programme is a postgraduate, cross-disciplinary education,
the overall objectives of which are:
Training students, by use of scientific
evidence, in the necessary skills used for:
a. initiating, planning, participating in, and evaluating preventive and health
promotions programmes, and for
b. participating in the planning and management of health and social services.
The programme comprises elective course modules on advanced level which enable
students to study in greater dept selected aspect of Public Health particularly
relevant to their own area of expertise. Furthermore, the programme includes the
completion of a dissertation based on a project carried out within a focused
area of field of interest.
1st year

The Masters Programme in Public

Aim of all main modules:
to provide, within the interdisciplinary framework. a. Knowledge on
crucial public health concepts, theories and facts. b. Basic skills in
independent literature search and in critical reading, inference,
summarising and communication of original public health scientific
literature. c. Basic skills as concern the analysis of empirical public
health data. |

Aim of all elective modules:
to provide deeper insight and to develop further skills within specific
areas of public health, slected by the stduents themselves among five
alternatives.

Assessment the first
year (60 ECTS)
Two oral or written exams, related to the elective modules (depending on the

2nd
year (30 ECTS)
Six two-day seminars and
individual supervision (65 hours per student) related to the master project (thesis).
Aim: to provide skills as concerns the independent planning and
implementation of scientific public health projects, including the collection,
retrievement and analysis of and inference from empirical data as well as the
communication of results.
Assessment 2nd year
Oral examination based on the thesis.
Teaching
and Learning Methods
Priority
is given to research-based teaching with an interdisciplinary perspective.
The course combines lectures and other learning methods such as group
work, discussions, presentations based on the participants' own working experience
and/or studies, case studies, and site visits. Participants are
expected to take active part in the course to allow exchange of experiences from
various disciplines and cultures.
All teaching is in Danish
except the elective modules which can be taught in English on the request
of at least one student. Furthermore, all the supervision, the thesis and exam can,
on request, be delivered in
English.
